A Curious Traveler's Guide to Africa’s Hidden Gems

Published: 1 October 2024

Consider yourself a globe trotter or well-traveled individual who has racked up more earthly miles than others? Or are you someone shy of crowds, in search of destinations few have discovered and where authenticity isn’t in the frills of resorts, but rather in the bumpy dirt roads and locals opening up their homes? If you’ve answered a resounding “yes” to either (or both) of these two statements, this blog is for you - Malawi, Ethiopia, Zambia and Uganda are all equally deserving of a spot on your bucket list. And here’s why…

Malawi: The Warm Heart of Africa

Known for its friendly people and stunning landscapes, Malawi offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Lake Malawi, one of Africa’s Great Lakes, is a crystal-clear oasis perfect for snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. The country’s rolling hills and plateaus are home to Liwonde National Park, where you can spot elephants, hippos, and crocodiles along the Shire River. Don’t miss the chance to hike Mount Mulanje, Malawi’s highest peak, offering breathtaking views and challenging trails for avid trekkers.

When Is The Best Time to Visit Malawi?

May to October (Dry Season): The dry season brings cooler temperatures, especially in the highlands, and clear skies, perfect for exploring Malawi’s national parks, hiking, and relaxing by Lake Malawi. Wildlife is easier to spot, particularly from July to October, as animals gather around water sources and vegetation is less dense.

Specific Highlights:

  • July to October: These are the best months for wildlife viewing in parks like Liwonde and Majete. The game is easier to spot, and the temperatures are warm but not too hot.

  • September to October: Lake Malawi is particularly beautiful during these months, and the water is calm and warm, making it great for swimming, diving, and water sports.

  • December to March, during the wet season the heavy rains can make some roads difficult to navigate, and outdoor activities like hiking can be challenging. However, if you enjoy birdwatching, the wet season brings migratory birds to the region, and the landscapes are lush and green.

Ethiopia: A Land of Ancient Mystique

Ethiopia’s rich history, unparalleled landscapes, and vibrant culture make it a must-visit destination for those seeking something unique. From the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela to the awe-inspiring Simien Mountains. The capital, Addis Ababa, is a bustling city with excellent museums, vibrant markets, and delicious cuisine. The Danakil Depression (very similar to Death Valley in the States), is one of the hottest and most otherworldly places on Earth, offering an unforgettable adventure for those wanting to experience something truly off the beaten path.

  • October to November: After the rainy season, the landscapes are lush and green, providing beautiful scenery for trekking and sightseeing.

  • January: This is one of the best months to visit Ethiopia, especially for cultural experiences. The country celebrates Timkat, the Ethiopian Orthodox Epiphany, with vibrant processions and ceremonies. It’s also a great time to explore the historical sites of Gondar and Axum.

Zambia: Home of the Iconic Victoria Falls

Zambia is synonymous with raw, untamed beauty. The mighty Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, one of the world’s largest waterfalls, provide a dramatic backdrop for adventure enthusiasts. You can bungee jump, white-water raft, or take a helicopter ride over this natural wonder. The national parks here, such as South Luangwa, offer some of the best wildlife experiences in Africa. Here, you can embark on a walking safari, where you’ll get up close to lions, leopards, and elephants in their natural habitat.

When Is The Best Time to Visit Zambia?

  • May to October: Zambia’s dry season brings sunny, pleasant weather, and wildlife congregates around rivers and waterholes, making it easier to spot animals in parks like South Luangwa, Kafue, and Lower Zambezi. This is also the best time to see Victoria Falls, especially from June to August, when the water levels are still high but not overwhelming.

Specific Highlights:

  • May to August: The cooler temperatures (especially in the mornings and evenings) and manageable water levels at Victoria Falls offer excellent visibility and photo opportunities. This is also a prime time for walking safaris, a popular activity in Zambia.

  • September to October: These are the hottest months, but also the best for wildlife viewing. As water sources dry up, animals gather around the remaining rivers and watering holes, leading to incredible sightings. The Zambezi River is also great for canoeing and fishing during this time.

  • December to March, brings heavy rains, making some roads impassable and camps in remote areas often close. While the landscapes become lush and green, wildlife is harder to spot due to dense vegetation, and some parks may be difficult to access. However, the rainy season is great for birdwatching, and Victoria Falls is at its fullest, although the mist can obscure views.

Queen Elizabeth National Park offers fantastic wildlife safaris, where you can spot tree-climbing lions, hippos, and buffalos. For the more adventurous, white-water rafting on the Nile River or hiking in the dramatic landscapes of Mount Elgon are unforgettable experiences. Uganda is also rich in culture, with warm hospitality and vibrant traditions.

When Is The Best Time to Visit Uganda?

  • The best time to visit Uganda is during the dry seasons, which typically run from December to February. During these periods, the weather is more favorable for outdoor activities, and wildlife viewing is at its peak, especially in national parks like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga National Parks and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Specific Highlights:

  • June to August: Another prime time for gorilla trekking and safaris, as the weather remains dry. This season is also good for birdwatching, as many migratory species are present.

  • While Uganda can be visited year-round, the wet seasons (March to May and September to November) may bring heavy rains, making some roads and trekking trails challenging to navigate. However, if you don't mind the rain, the scenery is lush and green, and there are fewer tourists, making it a quieter experience.

  • Water Sports: During the warm, dry period from December to February there is plenty of sunshine, perfect for water-based activities like white-water rafting, kayaking, and boat cruises on the Nile. The weather is also comfortable for exploring Jinja town and nearby attractions like the Nile River source.
