Luxury Gorilla Safari in Uganda - From The Pen of Another Satisfied 'Anywhere in Africa' Client!

We followed the trackers around a bush, and then, suddenly, we found ourselves trapped. A giant silverback Gorilla was only five meters ahead, some smaller females three meters to the right, and then, we saw movement in a bush to the left: out popped a one-year-old baby. We were overwhelmed, to say the least.

For a successful gorilla trek, pack for wet and muddy rainforest conditions. Essentials include waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved clothing, a rain jacket, gloves, a small daypack, water, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a camera.
Don’t forget your passport, trekking permit and any personal medication. We will send a comprehensive packing list well in advance upon confirmation of your trip. Read this blog if you'd like a better idea of what to expect on your gorilla trek and when the best times are to go.

Comfort, practicality and preparation are key when it comes to gorilla trekking.

Dress in lightweight layers so you can easily adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day. Neutral colours such as khaki, olive green and brown are recommended, as they blend into the natural environment and are less likely to attract insects.

A sturdy pair of waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support is essential. Be sure to wear them in several weeks before your trek to avoid blisters on the day. We also recommend packing gaiters to keep your trousers dry and protect your legs from mud, water and vegetation while walking through dense forest.

Other useful items include long-sleeved shirts and trousers, waterproof rain gear, gardening gloves for gripping vegetation, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, a small daypack and a reusable water bottle.

As part of our bespoke service, we'll provide you with a detailed gorilla trekking packing list before you travel, so you'll arrive fully prepared for one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife encounters.

Gorilla trekking takes place in a few unique regions of Central and East Africa. The most popular destinations are Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park.

Each destination offers a different experience.

Gorilla trekking is a safe and well-managed wildlife experience when organized with a reputable tour operator like Anywhere in Africa Safaris. Treks are led by experienced guides and trackers who understand gorilla behavior, the rainforest environment and safety procedures.

Visitors are briefed before the trek and must follow guidelines to protect both guests and the gorillas, including maintaining a safe distance and respecting viewing limits.

The level of difficulty varies depending on the location and gorilla group, so your fitness level and preferences will be considered when planning your trek.

Having limited mobility doesn't necessarily mean you have to miss out on the incredible experience of gorilla trekking.

The national parks in Rwanda and Uganda offer assistance for guests who may struggle with the hike. Depending on your needs, it is often possible to arrange a sedan chair (also known as a sedan) or a stretcher, carried by a team of experienced porters, allowing you to reach the gorillas safely and comfortably.

When planning your trip, we'll also request a gorilla family that's located closer to the park headquarters where possible, helping to reduce the length and difficulty of the trek. Porters are available for all guests and can assist with carrying daypacks or providing support on uneven terrain.

If you have any mobility concerns, simply let us know during the planning process. We'll work closely with the relevant park authorities to ensure the necessary arrangements are made, so you can enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

The cost of a gorilla trek depends on the country you choose. Gorilla trekking permits are the main cost and are subject to change.

In Rwanda, a gorilla trekking permit currently costs US$1,500 per person
In Uganda, gorilla trekking permits are currently US$800 per person (subject to change).

At Anywhere in Africa, we’ll help you plan the best gorilla trekking itinerary to suit your budget and travel style.
