For a successful gorilla trek, pack for wet and muddy rainforest conditions. Essentials include waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved clothing, a rain jacket, gloves, a small daypack, water, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a camera.

Comfort, practicality and preparation are key when it comes to gorilla trekking.

Dress in lightweight layers so you can easily adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day. Neutral colours such as khaki, olive green and brown are recommended, as they blend into the natural environment and are less likely to attract insects.

A sturdy pair of waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support is essential. Be sure to wear them in several weeks before your trek to avoid blisters on the day. We also recommend packing gaiters to keep your trousers dry and protect your legs from mud, water and vegetation while walking through dense forest.

Other useful items include long-sleeved shirts and trousers, waterproof rain gear, gardening gloves for gripping vegetation, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, a small daypack and a reusable water bottle.

Visitors are briefed before the trek and must follow guidelines to protect both guests and the gorillas, including maintaining a safe distance and respecting viewing limits. 

The level of difficulty varies depending on the location and gorilla group, so your fitness level and preferences will be considered when planning your trek. 

Having limited mobility doesn't necessarily mean you have to miss out on the incredible experience of gorilla trekking.

The national parks in Rwanda and Uganda offer assistance for guests who may struggle with the hike. Depending on your needs, it is often possible to arrange a sedan chair (also known as a sedan) or a stretcher, carried by a team of experienced porters, allowing you to reach the gorillas safely and comfortably.

When planning your trip, we'll also request a gorilla family that's located closer to the park headquarters where possible, helping to reduce the length and difficulty of the trek. Porters are available for all guests and can assist with carrying daypacks or providing support on uneven terrain.

The cost of a gorilla trek depends on the country you choose. Gorilla trekking permits are the main cost and are subject to change.

In Rwanda, a gorilla trekking permit currently costs US$1,500 per person. 
In Uganda, gorilla trekking permits are currently US$800 per person (subject to change).
