Giving Back to the Heart of Cape Town: Why Uthando Matters to Me

Africa has given me a life I could never have imagined. It has given me a career built around the magic of this continent, and friendships that span countries and cultures. It has given me a front-row seat to the extraordinary beauty and resilience of the people who call Africa “home.” And for that, I have always felt a responsibility - one that has certainly gotten louder through the years. Not just to showcase Africa to the world, but to give something meaningful back. One of the ways I do that is by supporting an incredible organization called Uthando South Africa.

What Is Uthando?

Founded by James Fernie, Uthando South Africa is a non-profit organization based in Cape Town that connects travelers with grassroots community projects across the city - and more recently, across the country. But Uthando is not about charity tourism or "quick feel-good" visits. It is about something far more meaningful!

Uthando identifies and supports community-led initiatives that are already making a difference in their neighborhoods. These projects range from youth empowerment and education to arts programmes, environmental initiatives, urban farming and social development. Instead of imposing solutions, Uthando amplifies local voices and provides a platform for these projects to grow sustainably. In other words, it allows communities to lead their own change.

Why This Matters to Me

As someone who has spent decades working in African tourism, I believe that travel should benefit the places we visit. Tourism has the power to create jobs, build businesses and protect natural environments. But it can also do something even more powerful. It can connect people.

Through Uthando, travelers have the opportunity to step beyond the postcard version of Cape Town and meet the people who are actively shaping its future. They meet young artists turning creativity into opportunity. Educators building safe spaces for children. Community leaders creating change where it matters most.
