When the World Feels Uncertain, Africa Still Delivers Bucket List Experiences

I’ve been sitting with this for a while. It’s not easy to write and it’s something I never thought I’d have to do again in a post-Covid world. Watching the headlines roll in. Watching the tone of emails shift. Watching the hesitation creep into conversations that, not long ago, were filled with excitement and most importantly, certainty. And if I’m honest, it’s been hard. No, not from a business perspective, but from a deeply personal one. Because the place that seems to be absorbing this uncertainty and second-guessing is my home continent - the one I love with my whole heart. Africa.

There’s a narrative forming right now that travel feels complicated - some are even saying “irresponsible.” And while I understand where that feeling comes from, I want to gently offer another perspective. One that comes not from headlines, but from being here, and also from recently flying out of the continent to Europe and back.

I was paying attention and being particularly picky about things. Putting on my client hat and comparing things to my usual Emirates or Qatar experience. So as you can imagine, I was pleasantly surprised by the calm, incredibly capable and well-run airline experience I had. Addis Ababa is one of those rare global hubs that quietly does its job without fuss, and importantly, it connects travelers into Africa without needing to transit through the Middle East at all. Getting to Africa is simpler than you might think - and you can do it without passing through the Middle East. A wide range of international airlines offer regular, scheduled flights each week, many of them direct. These include Delta, United, American Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, KLM, Air France, Kenya Airways, British Airways, and South African Airways.

Despite what you hear in the news or on social channels, Africa is not caught up in the current global instability in the way people might assume. Here, things are steady and going on as normal, there is no doomsday fuel purchasing. No looming sense that systems are about to fail. You are not going to arrive and find yourself stranded or navigating chaos.

Instead, you arrive in places like Cape Town, Nairobi, Johannesburg, all incredibly well connected and designed to welcome thousands of travelers per day, moving them seamlessly onward - whether that’s into the bush, along the coast, or across borders into neighboring countries.

You’re met by people who understand the value of your presence, not in a transactional way, but in a human one. Tourism here is intertwined with conservation, with livelihoods, with the protection of landscapes and wildlife that exists nowhere else on earth.

And for American travelers in particular, I want to say this clearly: you are welcome here.

There is no hostility waiting for you. No underlying tension. What you’ll find instead is warmth, openness, and a genuine desire to share Africa with you safely as you are family.

That’s why this moment feels so important to me.

Because what I’m seeing isn’t a reflection of Africa’s reality. It’s a reaction to a world that feels uncertain. And while that feeling is valid, I don’t believe Africa should be a casualty of it.

So this is not a call to ignore what’s happening in the world. It’s simply a reminder not to make hasty decisions rooted in fear, especially when they lead you away from Africa, that are still ready, safe, and waiting to welcome you.
